]]>Clean Fuels Alliance America uses the slogan “Better. Cleaner. Now!” because there is urgency in the mission. Removing a pound of carbon from the atmosphere today is worth more than removing a pound of carbon from the atmosphere a year from now—and certainly, 10 or 20 years from now. Carbon emissions in the atmosphere are cumulative, and time is a multiplier for many of the problems created by greenhouse gases, whether global warming or, on a more personal level, health problems such as increased instances of severe asthma.
Corporations and regulators are realizing that they don’t have to wait years for new technology to meet sustainability goals. Instead, they’re turning to clean fuels to make an immediate impact. U.S. biodiesel and renewable diesel production continue to ramp up, and the upward trajectory of clean fuels will only continue as companies and municipalities increase carbon reduction efforts in their fleets.
We have the solution. Switching to clean fuels is more often than not the fastest, easiest and least expensive way to meet emissions goals, especially in the heavy-duty transportation sectors. U.S. biodiesel and renewable diesel production grew by 500 million gallons in 2022, and the rapid growth is continuing to accelerate. Production for the first quarter of the year was 33% higher than the first quarter of 2022.
Investments in clean fuels are being made on an unprecedented scale. Renewable diesel is coming online quickly as companies have committed $4.5 billion for increased crush capacity through new or expanded facilities. Renewable diesel went from less than 500 million gallons of production in 2019 to a projected 3.34 billion gallons this year. The U.S. EIA and researchers at the University of Illinois project close to 6 billion gallons of U.S. renewable diesel capacity will come online in the next few years.
Biodiesel production has also increased, and a recent investment has the potential to push many fleets from lower blends of biodiesel to B100. Optimus Technologies raised $17.8 million to fund the further development and deployment of its Vector System, an advanced fuel system technology that enables heavy-duty diesel engines to operate on 100% biodiesel. The Vector System integrates into existing engines in operation or can be built into new engines as they are manufactured, leveraging the foundational diesel engine for the transition to a low-carbon future.
The world is realizing the potential of clean fuels to solve heavy-duty problems. By the time the industry gathers for the 2024 Clean Fuels Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, a whole new set of opportunities will be on the horizon. We have more hard work to do, but our industry will keep hitting new milestones. We’re proud to be your partner as we lower carbon emissions today, tomorrow and years in the future.

Since 1993, Clean Cities coalitions have steadily increased their energy use impact each year through diverse transportation projects for a cumulative impact equal to nearly 12 billion gasoline gallon equivalents, including using biodiesel in more than 200,000 vehicles in 2020. They have also aided in building out the fueling infrastructure to support this growing market.
Influence Award: Star Group L.P.
Operating throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, Star Group, L.P. is the nation’s largest retail distributor of home heating oil, based on sales volume. The company earned the Influence Award for its leadership role in the adoption and acceptance of Bioheat® fuel – typically a blend of biodiesel and heating oil.
With increasing concern about climate change both at the state and national level, Star Group believed that the home heating industry had to be part of the discussion. The company saw the environmental benefits of Bioheat® fuel for its customers and for the communities that they served. After starting with B20 blends, Star Group recognized that by providing increasing levels of biodiesel, they can offer an easy and affordable solution for home heating to help meet a goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050. The company has raised the bar within its industry, demonstrating that Bioheat® fuel can offer an economical option for reducing carbon emissions.
Inspiration Award: Patti Earley, Florida Power & Light
Florida Power & Light operates one of the most sophisticated power grids in the nation, serving 12 million customers statewide. It also operates one of the largest and longest-known biodiesel-powered fleets in the country, with approximately 1,840 biodiesel-powered vehicles. FPL purchases more than 400,000 gallons of B100 annually, blending and maintaining it in two company-owned fuel terminals.
Behind the scenes of this operation, you’ll find Fleet Fuel Operations Manager Patti Earley. She was part of this year’s massive restoration efforts after Hurricanes Ian and Nicole struck the state, supplying over 700,000 gallons of B20 to the 22,000 workers helping to restore power. She also assisted with FPL’s voluntary response to the Northeast coast after Superstorm Sandy in 2012, hauling B20 from FPL’s facilities to help mitigate major fuel shortages in the area. With every disaster, biodiesel has been there when the electric grid is down and petroleum fuels have all but vanished, performing reliably in FPL’s Mobile Command Unit and all other diesel vehicles and equipment.
What makes Earley so inspirational, though, is her willingness to volunteer her time, energy and passion, even loaning FPL vehicles generously for educational events about biodiesel and mentoring other fleets. Earley has reached thousands of people, freely answering the call for leadership or help. She is a Certified Automotive Fleet Manager, an appointed member of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Emergency Route Working Group, as well as Past President of the National Association of Fleet Administrators, one of only five women to serve as president.
Climate Leadership Award: Michael Wang, Argonne National Laboratory
In his nearly three decades at Argonne National Laboratory, Michael Wang has spearheaded various projects on addressing energy and environmental issues related to the transportation sector and energy systems. His tireless dedication earned recognition for Climate Leadership.
Wang is a Distinguished Fellow, Senior Scientist, the Director of the Systems Assessment Center, and Interim Director of the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis division for Argonne. He has led the development and applications of Argonne’s GREET (Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Technologies) model for life-cycle analysis of advanced vehicle technologies, transportation fuels, and other energy systems. Notably, the GREET model will be used to calculate the federal tax credits for clean fuels.
His work in the life-cycle analysis area has been used by international institutions, including the U.N. International Civil Aviation Organization, government agencies and industries, and is cited extensively in research and academic fields. The GREET model is used to calculate the value of credits for all bio-based fuels under California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard, informs EPA’s analysis for qualifying fuels under the Renewable Fuel Standard and will be used to calculate federal tax credits for clean fuels beginning in 2025. As of 2020, there are more than 43,000 registered GREET users worldwide.

]]>Joining the panel of experts was Joel Feucht, Vice President & General Manager for Caterpillar’s Large Reciprocating Engine business. Feucht stated, “At Caterpillar, we’ve long recognized the value of sustainable biodiesel and other renewable fuels to our customers who have prioritized the decarbonization of their operations. In fact, CAT diesel-fueled power solutions have enabled operation on B20 biodiesel blends and various hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel products for more than a decade. With the increasing availability and adoption of renewable fuels, we’re committed to expanding our product and service offerings to help equipment owners further capitalize on the benefits they offer.”
As part of a Vehicle Technology Showcase at the Clean Fuels Conference, these featured equipment manufacturers and fleets are displaying a wide variety of vehicles and industrial equipment that supports the use of biodiesel and renewable diesel. While B20 (a blend of 20 percent biodiesel with 80 percent ultra-low sulfur diesel) has been the industry norm for more than a decade and can be used in the majority of diesel vehicles without modification, many fleets are now looking beyond B20 to further accelerate their decarbonization efforts. One hundred percent biodiesel (B100) reduces carbon emissions by more than 70 percent, and Clean Fuels Alliance America member company Optimus Technologies has engineered a system that allows fleets to capitalize on those benefits and run their heavy-duty vehicles on B100 even in the harshest conditions.
Optimus Technologies is showcasing a 2023 Freightliner 114SD equipped with their B100 fuel system technology at the Clean Fuels Conference this week. On loan from the manufacturer, Vac-Con, the truck is being upfitted with Optimus’ Vector System during the truck manufacturing process. The final form of this truck will be a 10-Yard Combination Vacuum Truck for sewer cleaning operations, with the ultimate destination being the Washington, D.C. Water and Sewer Authority.
Colin Huwyler, CEO of Optimus Technologies, stated, “The Optimus Vector System is enabling commercial and municipal fleets across the country to immediately decarbonize their most challenging assets. Optimus is proud to be creating a path to a more sustainable future with leading fleets like D.C. Water by using 100 percent biodiesel to power the critical equipment that keeps the infrastructure in our nation’s capital functioning.”
Clean Fuels Conference attendees as well as local Tampa-area residents will also have the opportunity to test drive some of the latest biodiesel-capable diesel pickup trucks and SUVs coming to market in 2023 during a Biodiesel Ride-and-Drive event at the Tampa Convention Center on Public Day – Wednesday, January 25th from 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM. The event will feature new diesel models supplied by local dealers including Elder Ford of Tampa and Courtesy Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. In addition, Florida Power and Light will be showcasing several of its biodiesel-powered fleet vehicles that have been a critical part of FPL’s recent hurricane recovery operations.

]]>The post Clean Fuels Alliance America Celebrates a Biodiesel Innovator in Honor of National Biodiesel Day appeared first on Clean Fuels Alliance America.
]]>This year it was especially meaningful as our industry celebrates 30 years of clean fuels innovation and recognizes how far we have come since the early days of biodiesel. Today, we are witnessing an explosion in demand for low-carbon fuels like biodiesel, renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. It is because of that growth and diversification that the National Biodiesel Board recently announced a new name and new brand — Clean Fuels Alliance America.
With that transition, the industry reflects on how it all began. Alan Weber, an economist and farmer from Missouri, has been involved with biodiesel from the beginning, helping a once nascent industry soar to heights never imagined 30 years ago. Weber’s story is unique and his passion for the industry is contagious.
As a student at the University of Missouri in the early 1990s, Weber began working alongside a professor who had some ideas about taking vegetable oils and turning them into fuel. Weber was excited about the prospect and started analyzing this new opportunity. He traveled to Europe to learn more about their process, spent time in underground coal mines in Kentucky and with urban bus fleets looking at tailpipe emission reductions with biodiesel.
Fast forward to today and Weber said, “Carbon is very much on the forefront of people’s minds. We can actually, through our farming practices, have an impact on the carbon intensity score of the fuels that we use such as biodiesel and renewable diesel, and that is something we can do right now.”
The clean fuels industry has seen and will continue to see significant growth as the world further prioritizes clean energy. Clean Fuels will be an integral part of the solution for sustainable energy that’s not only affordable but also scalable and available now, with biodiesel continuing to lead the way.
“I continue to be involved in this industry for probably one simple reason,” he said. “This is the nexus of agriculture and the environment. I can’t think of anyplace I’d rather be. How do I have a bigger impact on our economy, the environment and the planet all at one time? Simple as that.”
Today, the industry supports about 64,000 jobs nationwide. Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 57 percent to 86 percent, according to the EPA. In 2020 the US market reached 3 billion gallons and has exceeded the minimum requirements under the federal renewable fuel standard.

]]>“These groups and individuals have really upped the ante when it comes to our industry’s success,” says Donnell Rehagen, CEO of Clean Fuels Alliance America. “The leadership and dedication demonstrated by each of these honorees shaped our industry into what is today and positioned us well in the future. We thank each and every one of them for their great work.”
The honorees, recognized on the mainstage throughout the weeklong conference and expo, are:
NBB Past Chairs – Kenlon Johannes Pioneer Award
During the first 30 years of our industry’s organization, the range of leaders who served as chair of National Biodiesel Board helped shape the biodiesel and renewable diesel industry into what it is today. Pioneering a path forward, the past chairs laid the groundwork from technical and legislative efforts to education and awareness. They overcame some of the industry’s biggest hurdles and delivered on many successes.
Their background varied, some farmers and some biodiesel producers, but they all shared one thing: a passion for the industry and its success. Current Chair Chad Stone honored these past chairs with the Kenlon Johannes Pioneer Award:
Mike Adams, Adams on Agriculture – Impact Award
Farm Broadcasters have played an instrumental role in building awareness of the biodiesel industry among farmers. From the very beginning, Mike Adams has helped build grassroots advocates by sharing the story of clean fuels like biodiesel and renewable diesel on his national radio shows and covering the latest in production, demand and policy development news. Mike’s reputation as a trusted, reliable voice in farm broadcasting — built over his 48-year career in radio — helped build acceptance for a new, clean fuel and maintain support as the industry grew.
Mike’s impact on the industry came from his willingness to share the stories that needed to be told, his awareness of the industry’s value to his audience — namely, farmers — and his expertise regarding the policies that impact the industry’s future.
Mahanth Joishy, City of Madison – Inspiration Award
Mahanth Joishy’s mission is inspiring in itself. He wants to help the thriving city of Madison, Wisconsin, become one of the most sustainable cities in the world — with biodiesel at the heart of the effort. When Joishy became the city’s fleet manager in 2017, one of his first acts was to switch the city’s heavy-duty fleet — about 500 vehicles — to blends of biodiesel fuel.
Under his leadership, diesel vehicles, from fire trucks to parks department mowers to the all-important snowplows, now run on up to a 20% biodiesel blend (B20) most of the year. The city is even retrofitting 17 fleet service vehicles to run on 100% on biodiesel fuel (B100) year-round. Joishy’s leadership and passion will continue to inspire other cities and fleets to expand their use of biodiesel fuel.
Nancy Foster, North American Renderers Association – Influence Award
Biodiesel and renewable diesel have built a reputation on a diverse blend of feedstocks. As President and CEO of the North American Renderers Association, Nancy Foster has been a significant influence in feedstock expansion. Her leadership within NARA has helped continue to grow and solidify biodiesel’s sustainability messaging throughout the country.
The industry would not have been the same without her voice in D.C. Nancy also worked for the American Soybean Association as their chief lobbyist and director of ASA’s Washington office — where she successfully gained Congressional passage of landmark legislation to establish the national soybean checkoff for research and promotion.
Clean Fuels Alliance America hosts this annual must-attend event to facilitate business, education and networking. The conference and expo is made possible by generous support of industry sponsors.
